The science of raw cacao

Two bonbons carry 256 mg of cacao flavanols, 2,000 mg of Cordyceps militaris, and 3 g of sugar. This page covers what's in them, where it comes from, and what researchers have studied.

Most chocolate is roasted, ours isn't

Roasting is where most chocolate gets its flavor. It's also where the heat starts breaking cacao flavanols down. We skip the roaster and keep our cacao raw, so more of the bean's naturally occurring flavanols make it into every bonbon.

Roasted Most dark chocolate

High heat

Flavanols break down. The heat cracks them apart.

Raw Lore

Never roasted

Flavanols stay intact. Nothing heats them.

Illustration, not to scale. Each dot stands for flavanols in the bean.

What's in two bonbons

Two bonbons are one serving. These are the numbers per serving:

A stack of Lore bonbons with melted chocolate dripping down the side

256mg

Flavanols and procyanidins

From our raw, unroasted cacao. Research links cacao flavanols to the body's own nitric oxide production and healthy blood flow.*

400mg

Beta-glucans

From our Cordyceps militaris extract. Researchers have studied Cordyceps militaris for immune function.*

2,000mg

Cordyceps militaris

Our mushroom ingredient, a 100% fruiting-body extract. Research links Cordyceps militaris to energy and exercise performance.*

3g

Sugar

From coconut palm sugar, our only sweetener. Two bonbons have 63 calories.

The compounds behind the numbers

What each one is, how your body handles it, and the studies the research comes from. Every study tested the compound or ingredient on its own, not Lore itself.

Flavanols and procyanidins

256 mg per serving

Flavanols are plant compounds found in cacao. Procyanidins are flavanols linked together in chains, and our lab report counts the two together.

Researchers have studied cacao flavanols for their role in supporting the body's natural nitric oxide production, which is linked to healthy blood flow.*

Inside the 256 mg

Monomers 54.5 mg

Single units, like epicatechin. Absorbed more readily in the small intestine.

Oligomers 201.9 mg

Short chains of 2 to 10 linked units. Gut bacteria in the colon break them down so they can be absorbed.

From Eurofins certificate of analysis #5494359-0, August 21, 2026. The same report measured 13.7 mg of epicatechin.

The studies

Cocoa flavanols and blood vessel function
  • Who Healthy adults, across several human studies
  • How long Studies of 1 week and 12 weeks
  • Measured How well blood vessels widen (endothelium-dependent vasodilation)
  • Found Europe's food safety panel concluded that cocoa flavanols help maintain the normal widening of blood vessels, which contributes to normal blood flow.*

The four ingredients

Tap one to see where it comes from, what's in a serving, and what researchers have studied.

  • Ripe cacao pods

    Raw organic cacao

    72% cacao, never roasted.

    Ripe cacao pods

    Raw organic cacao

    72% cacao, never roasted.

    • What it is The seeds of the cacao pod. Most makers roast them, which is where chocolate gets much of its flavor, and the heat breaks down cacao flavanols. We skip the roaster.
    • Sourced from Co-op farmers in Peru, who grow it organically on 184 regenerative farms.
    • In two bonbons 256 mg of flavanols and procyanidins, measured by Eurofins on August 21, 2026.

    • What it is A mushroom. We use the fruiting body itself, with no mycelium, grain, or fillers.
    • Sourced from Nammex, as a certified organic, 100% fruiting body, 8:1 dual extract.
    • In two bonbons 2,000 mg of the extract, which carries 400 mg of beta-glucans.

    • Why it's here It gives each bonbon a slow, smooth melt without dairy or emulsifiers, so Lore stays vegan and paleo.

What you might notice, and why

Everyone's baseline is different, so there's no single day when you're supposed to feel a change. Use the first 60 days to build the habit and pay attention.

Days 1–7

Build the ritual

Before your first two bonbons, jot down how your days feel right now. Then focus less on what you feel and more on making Lore part of your day: morning coffee, a workout, the afternoon slump.

Cacao flavanols

Two bonbons carry 256 mg. Researchers have studied cacao flavanols for their role in the body's own nitric oxide production, which is linked to healthy blood flow.*

Days 7–14

Pay attention

Start checking in with yourself. How's your energy? Your stamina? Everyone's baseline is different, so there's no single moment when you're supposed to notice a change.*

Cordyceps militaris

Each serving has 2,000 mg. Researchers have studied Cordyceps militaris for energy and exercise performance.*

Days 14–30

Keep it going

By now, two bonbons should feel less like something you have to remember and more like something you look forward to. They don't replace the basics, though: movement, sleep, and good food.

Beta-glucans

The Cordyceps extract carries 400 mg per serving. Researchers have also studied Cordyceps militaris for immune function.*

Day 30

Take stock

Look back at your notes from day one. What's become part of your routine? Your next pouch ships around now, and our 60-Day Cacao Challenge has its midpoint check-in here.

Your own notes

The research tested each ingredient on its own, not Lore itself. How it fits your day is something only you can track.

Day 60

Look back

Compare where you started with where you are now. Challenge participants close with a short reflection in their own words.

Real feedback

Our 60-Day Cacao Challenge gathers feedback from people who eat Lore every day. It isn't a clinical trial, and everyone's experience is different.

Where it comes from

Three things we check before anything goes in a pouch.

  1. Three people look out over a cacao farm

    184 regenerative co-op farms

Co-op farmers in Peru grow our cacao organically on regenerative farms.

  2. Dried Cordyceps militaris mushrooms on a blue background

    Mushroom extract from Nammex

Certified organic Cordyceps militaris, made from 100% fruiting body as an 8:1 dual extract.

  3. Back of a Lore Double Chocolate pouch with the supplement facts and ingredients

    Tested by an independent lab

Eurofins measured 256 mg of flavanols and procyanidins per serving in August 2026.

What the research says, and what it doesn't

What it says

  • Researchers have studied cacao flavanols and Cordyceps militaris. Every study we cite is listed below.
  • An independent lab measured the flavanols in a serving of Lore.
  • Every number on this page comes from the pouch or an independent lab report.

What it doesn't

  • No study has tested Lore itself. The research covers the ingredients on their own.
  • Lore isn't a treatment for any condition. Check with your doctor before adding a supplement, especially if you take medication.
  • Our 60-Day Cacao Challenge gathers feedback from people who eat Lore every day. It isn't a clinical trial.
